The Big Question:

What is Speech-Communication? And what will you gain in our SPEECH-COMMUNICATION COURSE ?

Well, stay with me, and I will show you.

First of all, from the word "Speech," if you think it's only for people who like to speak in front of others, you must get rid of that misunderstanding now!

Speech-Communication is a study of how to effectively speak a language. The study covers every situation, from Conversation to Public Speech.

Through it, you practice how to clearly express your thoughts, ideas, and feelings to your listeners. You learn how to communicate with confidence and with impact, how to speak both interestingly and persuasively. It is an important and useful study for anybody who wants to successfully communicate in English.

More and more, as Japan becomes internationalized, Speech-Communication skills become necessary. This is not an opinion. It is a fact.

Culturally, English and Speech are inseparable.

If you think it's important to study English, then it is important for you to study SPEECH . . .

. . . because English ALONE is not enough.

"The Boring Teacher"

In Japan today, there are some very good speakers of English. However, there is a difference between being a good speaker and being an Effective Speaker.

Do you remember a "boring" teacher during your student days?

That teacher probably had an uninteresting style of speaking. And you probably fell asleep during his lectures.

But did that teacher speak good Japanese?

Yes he did. 　His Japanese vocabulary, grammar, his pronunciation . . . they were all OK.　(He was a native speaker of Japanese, right?)

He was a good speaker of Japanese, but he was not an Effective Speaker.

It is the same in English. Not all people who speak English well can communicate effectively.

English Itself is Only a Tool

There is a big difference between "speaking" a language and "communicating" in that language with other people.

English is a tool for communicating, not a goal in itself.　If we do not study how to use this tool, it is the same as buying an expensive car without knowing how to drive it.

Because if your listeners become bored or confused, they will "switch off" their ears, no matter what you say, no matter how good your English.

This is true not only for Public Speeches, but also for Conversations and Group Discussions.

Being able to keep your listeners interested, and making yourself clearly understood are the essence of Effective Speaking.

A few years ago, I asked one of my new students in SPEECH-COMMUNICATION COURSE　why he decided to take the class.

"Because I was ashamed to be a Japanese," he replied.

His classmates were shocked.　"What do you mean?"

He continued, "I am an engineer, and last month, I attended an international conference in the United States with my boss.

"It is well known in my section that my boss can speak English well.　And his research paper was excellent.

"But at the conference, when it was time for him to make his presentation, it was terrible.　He just kept on reading and reading from his papers without even looking up.

"Many listeners from many countries became totally bored . . . and some people even stood up and left the room!

"I promised myself that when I make a presentation in the future, I would never want to be like him.

"That's why I took your class."

The world is rapidly changing.

Ability of English alone will not be enough anymore.

What we need is a new awareness, a new skill, to be used together with English―to give us the power to effectively communicate with people.

Imagine yourself speaking in front of people from around the world . . . You are freely and confidently expressing yourself in English, in a clear and lively manner . . . All your listeners are interested . . . They are greatly enjoying listening to you . . .

It's not a dream, if you have the desire to make the challenge.

The Challenge to Become
an Effective Speaker

I. Learn How to Speak with an EFFECTIVE SPEAKING STYLE

Do you know how to effectively use your VOICE and BODY? They are the "instruments" that make up your STYLE of communication. If you don't know how . . . or if you don't think it's so important, that's a big mistake. When your speaking STYLE is poor, your content―your message―also dies. And very often, unfortunately, even the speaker's personality is misunderstood. Remember your boring teacher? It's not only intonation or gestures. It is much deeper than that.

Outside the classroom, most of the people in your audience will be "first-time listeners." On the final week of each term, you will have a chance to speak as a "Guest Speaker" in another class.
